Our two month anniversary of living in our new house is tomorrow and it has been a long while since I posted my last home update. I thought today would be a great day to have an informal post about what has been happening over here at the #futureparlettresidence and share a two moth home update post! Speaking of which, we need a new hashtag because we are officially living in the future Parlett residence, so I’m think we need something new! I first want to start by saying just how thankful I am for our new home. It has been such a blessing and I have settled into my new home so well, which I am incredibly thankful for. We are still working on so many things, it’s almost embarrassing to say. However, I have had so many people tell me “Rome wasn’t built in a day!” and all I have to say to that is “Amen!”
Building our first home, and having our wedding, all in the same year was such an experience and one that left our bank accounts pretty dry. I’m not one who wants to decorate my whole house in day, but it is nice to have a sofa or bar stools. Thank goodness we have some amazing family supporting us and letting us borrow a few things, until we get completely settled. By now, you probably know after reading my blog that I am extremely picky and particular, especially when it comes to my home. I truly believe that the beauty lies in the details. So much so, that sometimes most of the time, I struggle with landing on the perfect choice, because I am just too darn picky! With that said, I do have my eyes on a couple of pieces of furniture, a few rugs and cabinet hardware, that I will be pulling the trigger on in the next few months. I mentioned on Snapchat that I picked up these mirrors for my master bath and truthfully they just didn’t work, no matter how much I wanted them too. I am currently moving them around, to see where I can put them, because I really love them and want them to live somewhere in my home!
The other day Jay, and I, sat down and began a conversation about some of the things we learned from building our home. We are still working on our list, which will be up on the blog soon, but in the mean time I wanted to share some initial thoughts, experiences and kinks we are still working out, after living in our home for 2 months!
TWO MONTH HOME UPDATE
Paper Towel: Target
We have officially been living in our home for almost two months and we have learned so much during that time. Having a new home, moving or just living on your own for the first time, all have such a learning curve and there is so much to keep up on!
We still haven’t purchased hardware for our cabinets, which was something that was high on my list before moving in. I figured once we moved in, it would slip our mind and our cabinetry would begin to get dirty, from opening it without handles. Sure enough, two months later I still haven’t decided on our hardware and the cabinets are getting dirty! This is definitely priority at this point and I am really loving these options from Studio McGee.
I feel like the scuff marks and touchups are unavoidable. The painters are coming today to do some miscellaneous work around the house. We have to have our corbels painted, our back columns painted, the window seat and a couple of other scratches and things! I’m excited for everything to be fully painted. It seems that the few things that aren’t painted, always catch my eye.
Cable & Internet
This is a big one. We have lived in our house for almost tow months now without cable OR internet. You heard that right. That has seriously been a struggling in itself. Being without some of my favorite tv shows is difficult, but having to use my iPhone hotspot for internet, or go to the local coffee shop hasn’t been easy either. I’m literally over it. If Cox Cable wasn’t the only company around with decent internet, I would have already switched. It’s literally ridiculous, but thats a story for another day.
Cleaning, Lot’s of Cleaning
Who knew a brand new house is so dirty? I sure didn’t, but I do now! I still keep finding mound of dust hidden around the house on window panes, in upstairs cabinets and everywhere in between. The mart thing to do would have been to hire a lecture straight off, and I know that is what we will resort to soon, but man oh man! It’s never ending.
My shopping list is also something else that is never ending. Everything from cleaning supplies to storage containers, trying to keep a new house organized is difficult! Especially if you haven’t ever lived on your own before. It’s a little exhausting but I keep telling myself to just do a little each week, even though I just wish I could snap my fingers and have everything be done! We still need a lot of furniture but that is just expensive and will take time. Patience, I must have patience!
Relief & Comfort
There is no other word to describe the process other than blessed. Although it has been struggle and is still just as challenging now that we have moved in, I am just so thankful to have had this opportunity. I think that in difficulties we grow so much and learn at such a fast pace. Building our first home was such a huge step and looking back, I wonder what was I thinking? How did I know we could do it? Honestly, when we decided that we want to build, the question of whether or not we could do it, never crossed my mind. I never once doubted our abilities or thought that it would be too difficult. It was just a part of me, I knew that we could do it. Half way through, I wondered if we would ever make it to the end, but look here we are. We did it! There is so much to be said for building a house, it truly is a huge obstacle, but one I have grown to love. I have become obsessed with the building process, the design aspect and taking a drawing and turning it into a home. Isn’t that just amazing?
I feel so much comfort sitting in our home, I honestly hate to leave it! It makes me so proud that Jay and I did this together and that all of our plans, although some changed along the way, are still being fulfilled. It truly just reminds me just how much I have to be thankful for. Although our sweet home may be empty for the moment, and there is still so much work ahead, it is ours and it is beyond anything more than what we dreamed of!
Lastly, but certainly not least, we have yet to install cabinets in our master closet. Which basically means our clothes are a disaster. We picked up some metal racking at Lowes, cute right? It’s doing the job, but it isn’t doing it so well. I feel like there is some sort of fashion handbook somewhere that says “One shall not store Christian Louboutin pumps and Chanel handbags on metal racking!” But, that’s just where we are right now. Hopefully, the closet will also be coming soon too, but for now we are just doing our best, with everything!
I feel like this post was a bit all over the place, but I hope that it gave you a honest view into our everyday life and some of the struggles we are obstacles as new homeowners! If you like these informal, and desperately honest posts, please let me know and I will do more! As I mentioned at the beginning, there will be a post coming up within the next month about the things we learned from building, but for now I hope you enjoy this post. If you have any questions, please let me know.
