July 8, 2016
4th of July brought on all of the red lips feels and I’m officially obsessed! I will be quite honest when I tell you that red lips haven’t always been my thing. Truthfully, I don’t think its really the fear of the color or not knowing how to apply it, that holds me back from wearing red on the regular. It’s the fear of having red lipstick all over my face and teeth that prevents me from popping on the color more often! Because, red lips have taken over my mind the past few days, I thought that I would share with you how I apply my lipstick to ensure that it stays put, looks flawless and will really have anyone you encounter asking what shade your wearing!
It seems like no matter how hard I try, my lips are always a little rough and flaky. So before I apply red lipstick and when they just need a little extra pampering, I always like to use my favorite Sara Happ lip scrub. This stuff is incredible! It tastes heavenly and is a gentle and efficient scrub. I don’t want my exfoliant to feel as if it’s taking my entire lip off, so this one is perfect. It not only exfoliates, but it has enough moisture to help hydrate my lips as well. Gentle, tasteful and leaves my lips plump and softer than ever, what more could I ask for? #winwin
Exfoliating and moisturizing are essential for making any lip product look good. I like to exfoliate AND moisturizer about 15-20 minutes prior to applying my lipstick. This way, they both have time to soak in and really do their job. One of my favorite things about YSL lipsticks is that they are SO moisturizing, that this usually isn’t a huge issue. However, to be safe and if you are using other lip products, applying your favorite lip balm a few minutes before applying your lip color is a good idea. My favorite lip balm is the Rose Balm by Aerin. It’s so hydrating and smells amazing. Plus, how chic is the packaging? Having dry lips, which will be made extremely visible with color, is not a good idea. So, I would highly recommend moisturizing, all the time, but especially if you are going to wear a bold lip!
Contour & Highlight
This step is optional, but I really like to highlight and contour my lips if I am wearing a bright lip color. I could [or probably should, if you would like to know more] write an entire post on this, and how to really make your lips pop. My must have tool for cleaning up my color and highlighting my lips is the NYX Wonder Pencil in the shade light. I use this for sooo many things. I use it on my waterline, the inner corners of my eye, small areas that need highlighting and of course, my cupids bow! The NYX wonder pencil is the absolute best product for highlighting your cupids bow and you can also come behind your liner and clean up with it. Seriously, its such a must have. I also like to contour a bit under my bottom lip on my upper chin area. This really helps to make your bottom lip pouty and appear plumper. If you would like a tutorial post on how to make your lips appear fuller, just let me know. I would love to write it! you can also apply a little concealer to your lips to establish a muted canvas.
Line & Fill
Lining your lips is huge when it comes to applying red, or in general if you want your lips to look good. It’s important to make sure you have a clean line when wearing red. I first line all the way around my lips, starting at my cupids bow. Then I like to go back in and fill in the color all over my lips. This will help for the color to look smooth all the way across and last even longer. It also makes touching up your lipstick easier, because you have such a good solid base. You can think of it as your base coat! This color from YSL is a rich and bright red, that is beautiful on every skin tone. It’s easy to apply and literally glides right on.
Apply the Lipstick
Last, but certainly not least, you can go ahead and apply your lipstick! With all of the work you have put into prepping your lips, this should be the easiest and quickest step. Some people like to apply powder and all, but I really don’t see the point. If you complete the first 4 steps and use a good lipstick, you shouldn’t have any problems. It’s normal to have to reapply every so often, but you really won’t need any additional application! Because I’m so paranoid about having lipstick on my teeth, I will give you a little tip, to help with that. It may sound a little weird, but I promise it works. What you want to do is take your pointer finger and stick it in your mouth [just bare with me]. Close your lips gently around your finger and pull your finger out of your mouth. You will see the red lipstick ring around your finger, that’s what will easily get on your teeth! I seriously do this a few times and redo it overtime I reapply. But it works like a charm!
As for my favorite red color, if you read Timeless Taste on the regular, you know that YSL is my favorite lipstick and this red is nothing short of amazing! It’s hydrating, vibrant and last long on the lips.
