Moving into our home during the holidays has been both a blessing, and a challenge. But when is moving ever really easy? Shortly after moving in, and I’m talking like a day after, because we have only been living here a couple of weeks, I decided that I really wanted to decorate our home for the holidays, even if we didn’t have any furniture! Little, by little, I slowly added a few more decorations, until I have now completely surpassed my decorating plans for this year. After giving it a little thought, I wanted to share with you some ways that you can turn your house into a home, this holidays season. This is also a way I can share with you our home for the holidays, even though it is still in the process of becoming a “home.”
With this being our first Christmas in our own home, and not our parent’s home, I was a little nervous we might get sad, and lonely. However, I have found that filling our home with candles, lights, garland and wreaths, has really helped out! So, if this is your first holiday on your own, I hope that you find this post helpful and feel inspired to deck your halls this holiday! I promise, it will all be worth it!
How to Make Your House Feel Like Home for The Holidays!
Tree, Wreaths and Greenery
Although it may seem like a lot, if you just moved into your home, skipping out on getting a tree is just a terrible idea. GET THAT TREE! Jay and I made so many memories this year, by going to get our tree at a Christmas Tree Farm. We loved it and had so much fun getting it up and decorated. Ask your family, and friends, to help you decorate for the holidays. My parents helped us get the tree into the house, in the stand and setting up straight. Then my mom came over the next day to help get the lights on it and Jay and I spent some time decorating it together.
We also hung wreaths on our front door, our kitchen hood and added garland to our mantle. I like to have fresh flowers, or greenery, in vases throughout the house, but definitely in the kitchen. You might think about adding the to your powder room too.
I feel like this is self-explanatory, but the fragrance of your home can really help its aesthetic! Light candles that have a warm, inviting scent for the holidays. Try something sweet or a fresh balsam scent to really enhance the holiday spirit.
Although we don’t have much furniture (including a coffee table or side table where you would put these items) adding family pictures really helps a lot! Surrounding yourself with the people you love is so important. Jay and I are both huge on family. We love our families so much, and each and every member means the world to us. I can’t wait until wee can add family photos around our house. Try swapping out the fames for something more holiday-ish or pulling out your Christmas photos.
In one way décor has been the easiest way to decorate this holiday, but also the most challenging at the same time. Let me explain… I love little pieces that I can set around, to really bring in al the holiday feels! I have so many cute little items, but I currently have no place to set them! I have decorated our powder room and our kitchen island, but other than that, I really don’t have any tables. Hopefully, we will get a coffee table soon!
Décor pieces are great because they are usually inexpensive and are a great way to add an extra touch to your home. Little pieces here, and there, really bring in warmth and let your guests know that you put in the extra time to decorate little spaces in your home!
One of my favorite things to do with holiday décor is set up little vignettes! You can do this on your coffee table, mantle, Kitchen Island or even a small version in your powder room. Whatever it is, pick a color, or theme, and group a few of your favorite things together! Don’t make things too matchy, matchy. Just a subtle touch will do.
Don’t Forget the Powder Room!
One of my favorite things that my mom does is she always adds little seasonal touches to her powder room. Honestly, that is the first room that is coming together in our new home, lol! I think that having a comfortable powder room, for your guests is one of the best things you can do for your home. I added this cute little tree our room, from Marshall’s! You don’t have to spend a lot, just a few little touches will do the job. Add a candle, some poo pourri spray and festive towels. You’re done!
I hope that you have found this post helpful and will implement a few of these tips during the last bit of the holiday season. I am still decorating, because I am just so behind! Also, I hope that you are enjoying the holidays with your family. This truly is the most wonderful time of the year!
