The Home

It’s the holiday season and everyone is decking their halls, so I thought it would be the appropriate time to share with you something my mom taught me years ago. How to Hang a Wreath Using Ribbon Without Damage! Hanging a beautiful wreath is so popular and there is nothing I love more than our front door each holiday season with a beautiful holiday wreath, hung with ribbon. Be sure to check out more of our home content and holiday decor here, if you enjoy this post.

I am so blessed to have a mother who is so talented and literally knows how to do everything! After watching Instagram stories and hearing people share that you should nail your ribbon to the top of your door or other places, I was honestly horrified. There is a much better way to do this and without the damage that is much easier. Like I said, I was a little shocked to hear people recommending that their followers put nails into their doors, windows, etc, for temporary holiday decor! So, I put it out there on social media to see if you would want a quick tutorial on how to hang a wreath using ribbon without damage and the verdict was, yes!

First, I should let you know that this is how we hang our wreaths every year. My mom has been doing this for years and she hangs a wreath on every window of her house, which has quite a few more windows than mine!

Gather Your Materials

One thing that always helps is gathering your materials! I’m so guilty of always jumping right into something without having everything I need and it ends up taking me ten times longer because I’m constantly looking for something. Here are the few items you will need, to hang your wreathing using ribbon. Some obvious, some not so obvious and some are just helpful!

  • Wreath
  • Ribbon
  • Thumb Tacks (I usually do 3 per wreath)
  • Hammer
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
  • Ladder

Measure Out Your Ribbon and Wreath Placement

Next, you will want to measure out your ribbon and wreath placement. Sometimes it’s helpful to do this with two people. I like to loop the ribbon through the wreath as if I’m hanging it, and see just how much ribbon I need to get the wreath placed exactly where I want it. Once you have your ribbon measure out the exact length you would like, go ahead and cut it straight across. At this point, I would go ahead and measure and precut your ribbon for however many wreaths you will be hanging. That way, everything will hang at the same height.

Hang Your Wreath

Loop your ribbon through your wreath and hang it over your door, or window, making sure that the edge of the ribbon lines up with the top of the door at the opposite hanging side (see photo below!) Using two, or I prefer three tacks, start by placing the first tack in the middle of the ribbon and pushing it into the door. Do the same on either side of the first tack. It might be helpful to use something heavy, such as a hammer to gently push the tack into the door.

I feel like it’s important to throw a disclaimer out there, just in case your wreath happens to fall! (lol) It does occasionally happen, but we use our front door and I haven’t had one of ours ever fall down. Windows are a different story because they usually bare all of the weather, unlike most fronts doors. However, it is rare that they will fall, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible! Also, if you are hanging your wreath in an area that will be weathered, take into consideration what ribbon you choose. Our front porch is covered, so I was able to use this beautiful red velvet ribbon.

Lastly, I thought I would mention that our front door is from Thermatru. I always get so many questions about our front door! Also, our wreaths are from a local store in Colonial Williamsburg called Boxwood and Berry.

If you like this type of post, be sure to let me know! I’m not very DIYish but I do love decorating our home and I do that by myself! So, if you have any decorating questions or concerns, be sure to leave them for me in the comment section and I will get back to you and/or write a blog post on the topic! I love sharing things my mom has taught me over the years. Thank you, Mama! I hope you enjoyed this post on how to hang a wreath using ribbon without damaging your doors or window!
