The Home

Recently, on my Instagram, I have shared sneak peeks of our detached garage that is currently being built. If you have been following our journey for a while, you will know that we built our home in 2015-2016. The process of building our house and making it a home has been been rewarding but also challenging at times. We have learned so many things along the way, one of which is that good things take time!

When we were planning our home, and during the first few years living here, we made plans for our property and goals of doing things in stages. Now, the time has come for building our detached garage and we couldn’t be more excited. I have a few more projects to share soon, so stayed tuned for that too!

After sharing a few pictures, I received quite a few messages asking why we decided to build a detached garage? For people who live in certain areas, having a detached garage probably isn’t as common as it is where we live. However, we have the space on our property and are very excited to have additional garage space to store Beau’s toys and one of Jay’s trucks. The garage will also have a small workout room and I am so excited! Hopefully, we can find the time to do some exercising other than chasing a baby around!

Over the years, I have pinned several inspiration images, on Pinterest, so Jay and I sat down to discuss everything we wanted to our garage to have and how it would look. While it wasn’t essential, we wanted a workout room and also loved the unique appearance that this small additional room would provide. Jay is our architect, designer and general contractor for this garage and after our discussion, he got to work drawing up this beautiful sketch! Although he is not an architect, he was able to sketch this small building for us.

He also scaled out the garage on our property survey for zoning so it would perfectly line up with our house. Honestly, I think he could have a very successful career as an architect! He really has the touch! Everything on the garage will mimic our home including the shutters, roofing, light sconces and our beloved wood garage doors. This view of our house is one of my favorites and I’m so excited for our detached garage to add twice the beauty.

We are grateful to have this additional storage and to also expand our property. Jay and I both believe that additions over time to our property really add personality, fun and function. While sometimes I feel impatient, I’m thankful that we have taken our time to build and create spaces we truly love and didn’t rush into anything.

So far, we have done the footing, foundation, and framing is going up now. So much has already changed from when I was able to write this. I will have a new update soon!

It’s an exciting time and I can’t wait to start working on the finishings. Thank you, Jay, for working so hard on this project for our family! Here are a few pictures of this project so far.
