Stripes are so controversial, yet still seem to always be an essential piece to a classic wardrobe. Truthfully, finding the perfect striped shirt can be challenging, but when perfected, you will be well on your way to mastering timeless and effortless style. If you’re like me, you automatically feel like you gained twenty pounds, after putting on you favorite striped shirt. Don’t worry, over the years I have grown more comfortable with the idea and found ways to wear stripes, without feeling completely like a blow toad. So you’re probably thinking, “Ok Morgan, how do I properly wear stripes?” Here are a few ideas to help you out.

Classic Stripes

Color Selection: Navy + White

I have always felt most comfortable in navy and white stripes. Honestly, I think they are much more of a classic look, even more so than black and white. Navy and white is nautical and allows for color, while still remaining in the “neutrals” category. It’s a popular option for  good reason.

Color Percentage Makes a Difference

Have you ever noticed that some striped shirts appear dark and some appear much lighter? Is it a navy shirt with white stripes or a white shirt with navy stripes? We might not ever know the answer, but one thing is certain, you aren’t the only one who has had that thought! The important thing is that the percentage of the shirt that is a given color makes a difference in the overall appearance. I find that shirts with more white look better on me than shirts with more navy. This options is more popular, but it’s important to find what you love and what looks best on you

Attention to Cut

Let’s just say that my first go around with navy and white stripes, was just not good. I never felt comfortable in the shirt I owned and to be honest, my discomfort was rooted in many striped fashion no no’s, including the fact that the cut was terrible for my body. The cut of a shirt really makes a difference, especially when you are wearing stripes. Does the cut of your shirt highlight your least favorite feature? Be sure to take note and figure out what you really want to highlight, or don’t, and go from there.

Classic Stripes

As with anything else, accessories play a huge role in making stripes more flattering. Try adding a chic scarf, or  vest, to your look. Adding a stand out accessoire will take some of the focus away from the stripes, making them more of a subtle background canvas, rather than the center focus of the look. If you are really feeling daring, tie a cute jacket, or sweater, around your waist. I know this might seem a little mom-ish but I love this look. It screams that you are comfortable with yourself and comfortable in that moment. It really makes a statement!

Stripes can be tricky, but in my opinion they are a must have piece in a classy girl’s wardrobe. Stripes look great with white denim, navy blazers, cut off shorts and so much more! Don’t be afraid to give them a go, even if you first experience wasn’t the best. I find that J. Crew does stripes really well. Just image sailing your way down the Amalfi coast with cut offs, the perfect striped tee and your favorite sunnies and straw hat. Now are we on the same page? I hope so!

What are your favorite ways to wear stripes?

Your styling and selection of this striped top is perfect! I love how you paired it with ripped jeans to give it some edge but selected classic ballet flats and handbag to keep the look conservative and chic. Great job! I also love how you explain to readers how important the cut of a striped Top is.
