I have let it slip on my Instagram Stories and Youtube that I have upped my supplement intake lately and, to my surprise, I have gotten so many questions about what I have been taking! To be completely honest, I have not always been a supplement girl and this is really still a trial and error kind of thing. I need to start out by saying that I’m not an expert and that you should consult your doctor before taking any supplements. However, these are a few supplements that I have been adding to my diet with the hopes of balancing my blood sugar, helping out my gut health and obviously the main goal is getting clear skin!
Keeping my skin clear and balancing my weight has always been an issue for me. For one, I struggle with eating well and I fully and completely understand that supplements are, well like I said supplements. They don’t change what I eat but I’m trying to slowly make better choices.
So far this year I can say with confidence that I have been drinking much more water. Jay completely cut out sodas, so naturally, I haven’t been drinking very many of them either, which is definitely a good thing! Since signing up for a gym close to home, I have been drinking a healthier version of this smoothie almost every day (or every other day). This is the perfect way to sneak in all of these powder supplements! I don’t taste them at all and I have incorporated so many great things into my breakfast. If you would like this smoothie recipe, just let me know!
Without further ado, these are the supplements that I have incorporated into my diet! I would love to know what supplements you take and why! Drop me a comment below!
Seven Supplements To Add To Your Diet
If you follow any health influencer you probably have already seen these Collagen Peptides from Vital Proteins. I began adding these to my diet last year, around this time, and I’m on my third container! I love adding collagen peptides to my smoothies and coffee, in the morning. Adding collagen to my diet was originally about my skin, nails, and hair. However, I quickly learned that there are other added benefits! Collagen also helps to aid in digestion and boosts your joint health. Those are definitely additives I can get on board with!
To be completely honest, I have basically stumbled my way into all of these supplements, however, they all have a purpose! I started adding maca powder into my smoothies after reading this book by Kelly Leveque. Most of the days, I have a version of the Fab Four Smoothie and I have grown more, and more, interested in adding to my breakfast. After adding maca into my smoothies, I was curious about the benefits and decided to do a little more research. Thankfully, I ran across this article which informed me of all of the benefits of maca. For me, I was personally interested in the whole “balancing hormones” aspect of maca. There are plenty of other benefits that you can read about here.
Spirulina is a natural algae and can be referred to as “pond scum”. I understand if you are ready to cross this off of your supplements to try list, but please hear me out on this one first! I decided to throw this one into the mix, just recently, after reading this article that shares how much Jenna Dewan Tatum (aka Mrs. Channing Tatum) loves it. Naturally, I was on board really quick after hearing this! I wandered my way through whole foods and decided to give it a try. The smell is atrocious and the color will definitely scare you. But, if you are brave enough to add it to your smoothie I would guess that you won’t even taste it! I don’t taste it at all and when you see the green color you know your body is going to love it. How could it not?
Anyways, on to the benefits! Spirulina packs a serious supplement punch and has many benefits. It is considered the most nutrient dense food on the planet. Filled with Iron, Protein, Vitamin B-1 and Calcium, Spirulina is capable of many things including balancing blood sugar, is an inflammatory and can aid those with allergies and help remove heavy metals from the body. It helps to supply more oxygen to our blood and is overall really great for the body!
My mom has been on to me for years to start taking a probiotic and after putting it off, and putting it off, I finally picked one up. I purchased this one from Whole Foods, only to come home and realize it’s much cheaper on Amazon! Anyways, probiotics are great because they fill our gut with good bacteria. These are formulated specifically for women and are intended to help with all things female! I love that they help to balance yeast, as this is something I struggle with and think it may be a huge source of my acne.
While I’m not making any final assumptions, just yet, I have noticed a huge difference in my skin since I began taking one of this every day. I will be faithful to these for quite a while!
As I mentioned before, I have added supplements into my daily smoothies based on the Fab Four recipe from Kelly Leveque. Flaxseed is one of those recommended supplements. I love adding peanut butter to all of my smoothies, personally because I just love the taste and it keeps me full. Flaxseed is a great compliment to smoothies with nut butter as it too has a very nutty taste. I add Flaxseed into my diet because it is rich in Fiber and Omega-3 fatty acids. Who doesn’t want a little more fiber in their diet?
I started out my supplement journey with starting to take a women’s daily multivitamin. One of the challenges I face, with taking vitamins, is that they always upset my stomach! I have to remember to take them with food and I do best taking them around lunchtime, but then I mostly end up forgetting to take them. As I have gotten a little older, this is quite funny, I have found that I do best taking gummy vitamins! Instead of being something I dread, and something that bothers my stomach, I now look forward to taking these every day.
If you are just starting out with trying to add more vitamins to your diet, I would suggest trying these! You can pick them up at your local Target, but I prefer to just get everything on Amazon Prime is such a lifesaver!
For me, feeling good takes work. I have found that I feel so much more energetic, and have clearer thoughts when I exercise. However, a lot of the time I have a little extra help from coffee and Vitamin B-12. I started taking B-12, a few years ago, when I was feeling tired all of the time. Fast forward a few years, I have now found out that I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and take medicine for that, which has helped to improve my energy levels. It’s always important to discuss the way you feel with your doctor.

That is pretty much it for the supplements that I take. Most of these I add to my smoothie or coffee and others I try to take on a daily basis. Right now, I’m fumbling my way through and try to incorporate more supplements into my diet. With that said, I’m not perfect and I’m just doing my best!
I would love to know your experience with supplements and what your favorites are! What do you think is essential?
