When you find your “happy place,” you just know it. I used to think people were a little crazy when they would say, “Oh, this is my happy place!” or “I’m going to my happy place!” I really just thought they might have been slightly loosing their minds. However, when I found my happy place, I knew exactly what they were talking about! I think it’s only fair for me to share my happy place and provide your with 5 Reasons You Should Start a Garden This Summer!
A few years ago, I decided to start growing a few herbs and one single tomato plant [In my moms flower bed, which probably wasn’t the best idea on my behalf]. It didn’t take me but a few weeks to fall head over heels in love with caring for my plants. Each year, I have expanded my garden, little by little, to the point where I am ready to commit to a pretty large, full size garden. Together, Jay and I have mastered building raised garden beds for a fraction of the price of using them, to create a sanctuary for me to grow all of my plants and herbs in! There is not denying my garden is my happy place. I love spending mornings, evenings and afternoons-when they aren’t too hot– walk amongst my plants and savoring their daily growth. Caring for my vegetables, fruits and herbs, makes me so proud and I enjoy learning more and creating my garden each season, not to mention the delicious harvest!
I am currently working on a post for building the raised garden beds, which I would highly recommend, but until that is ready [hopefully next week] I wanted to share with you 5 Reasons You Should Start a Garden This Summer!
Fresh Vegetables, Fruit and Herbs
Obviously, the most important part of having a garden at home is the availability of delicious fresh fruit and Vegetables! Once you have vegetables straight from the garden, it’s hard to eat them any other way! Tomatoes are so much richer, their deep red color is stunning and they just melt in your mouth-literally, they aren’t hard and crunchy! Home grown lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, squash, cantaloupe, you name it! They are all incredibly delicious and so much tastier and healthier, when grown at home!
Calm Environment & Stress Reliever
For me, one of the best parts about my happy place aka garden is the quiet time I have to my self, when I visit it! Having a few moments in the morning, or the evening, to go water the garden, pull out a few weeds, or pick any vegetables that are ready, makes my day so much better. I always leave my garden feeling calm, inspired and ready to take on a new adventure! I think you will too!
Simple garden work may not seem like much, but let me tell you, it’s hard work! Working in the garden, planting plants, pulling the garden hose around, raking out the weeds and more can be quite a good work out and great exercise! I always feel so happy working in my garden, because I’m not only caring for myself mentally and growing healthy things to feed my body with, but I’m actually able to work my muscles a little too!
Cook In Season
In addition to having fresh fruits and veggies, having a garden encourages us to cook with what vegetables are in season at the moment. Cooking in season is always healthier and more tasty! I love taking things from my garden to cook up new and inspiring recipes. I have a whole list planned for this summer, that I can’t wait to share with you, so be sure to subscribe to my blog!
Lastly, having a garden for me is another creative outlet in which I can express myself. Because it’s your own garden, you can choose what to grow and what not to grow! I also love designing the layout of my garden and getting to choose which plants will go where! I love all of the gorgeous colors and the unique features of each plant.
Gardening is so near and dear to my heart! I would have never imagined I would love it as much as I do.-and this is coming from the girl who wears gardening gloves, because she doesn’t want to mess up mani! IF you are on the fence about trying it out, start small and grow from there. Try adding a little potted tomato plant to your patio, or maybe pot a few herbs to use for cooking! There is nothing I love more than using fresh vegetables from my garden, or cutting all of our peonies to put into vases [you can see more peonies on my Instagram account here!] On another note, I have grown to love more vegetables, that I didn’t necessarily care for before, because they taste so much better coming straight from the garden! So maybe if you already have a small garden, give a vegetable a go that usually isn’t one of your favorites. You might be pleasantly surprised!!
What do you love most about your garden?
